When deciding whether or not to choose subtitling for you project, you need to understand your target audience. Many countries in Latin-America prefer voice dubbing over subtitles since there is a high index of illiteracy amongst the population, especially in third world countries. If you’ve ever tried to watch a film or documentary with sub-titles, after about an hour your mind is exhausted and you miss out on most of the presentation.
The English-Under Advantage
The cost for sub-titling compared to other techniques of getting your message across is not really advantageous; since you still have to transcribe, translate, have captions created with in and out points, then finally inserted into the new sub-master of your program. We only recommend this technique for short periods of time within your program if needed. English-Under though not Lip-Sync (where the voice actor matches perfectly the opening and closing of the speaker on screen) is a cost effective way of still getting your message across. You still hear about 20% of the original English, ambiance, audience reactions, etc, but have the Spanish voice actor follow your voice closely.
